Marriage

Hello Everyone!

Said I'd be here Tuesday...

Just finished watching an English movie Marry Me (1949) with Susan Shaw, David Tomlinson*

So, what does this have to do with the column IN COMMON? . . .

I was inspired to continue the theme of love coupled with marriage. Remember, I promised that every post would not be toooooo rigid. . . .The movie, a comedy, deals with individuals engaging a dating service for the purpose of procuring a marriage mate. (Pardon my sprinkling of old English. It was/is an old English flick :-)

After watching it I thought:

So, in 1949, men and women's reasons for wanting to marry and methods to seek a mate are basically the same as today; except the internet replaces the walk-in agency. . . Not that I needed an old movie to know this, but . . . anyway--.

Even if we were to take an imaginary time capsule back to 1849 or 1749, or even further . .

Hey! Let's journey back to Eve. . . Since her day marriage is/was on the minds of her offspring--both male and female. Despite the difference in cultures.

However, if we were to interview our forefather Adam, his comments may not be favorable, do you think? . . . I wonder if he was ever able to 'let go' after placing the blame on the Creator. Especially after first spouting poetic originally:

“This is at last bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh.
This one will be called Woman,
Because from man she was taken." Genesis 2:23.

Probably not, since the scriptures prophesied about Eve:

"And your longing will be for your husband, and he will dominate you.” Genesis 3:16.

And this after the Almighty went to such creative efforts on Adam's behalf:

"So Jehovah God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took one of his ribs and then closed up the flesh over its place. And Jehovah God built the rib that he had taken from the man into a woman, and he brought her to the man." verses 21, 22.

After his loving consideration:

"“It is not good for the man to continue to be alone. I am going to make a helper for him, as a complement of him". Genesis 2:18.

But I digress. . .

The point I would like to make is this: Marriage is a Divine arrangement instituted by the Creator himself.

Notice what Genesis 2:24,25 says:

"That is why a man will leave his father and his mother and he will stick to his wife, and they will become one flesh. And both of them continued to be naked, the man and his wife; yet they were not ashamed."

So what do you gather here?

That the Creator is setting the precedence regarding relationships for Adam's and Eve's future offspring?

God’s use of Adam's rib in creating the first woman could/should have impressed on this first human couple the closeness of their union and future unions. He made no arrangement for divorce or for having more than one mate at the same time.

Their marital union was for them to: “Be fruitful and become many, fill the earth and subdue it". Genesis 1:28.

So, has God Almighty changed his purpose for humans and the earth?

Check back Thursday for the answer.
